Nursery Essentials for Your New Arrival

Pregnancy is an exciting time and getting your home ready for the arrival of a new little one can be a fun but overwhelming experience. You may even be feeling the urge to ‘nest’ and make your home feel clean, safe and cosy ready to welcome your new baby. To help you plan for the new arrival, here are a few nursery essentials that you won’t want to forget that will make your baby’s room pretty, cosy and practical. You might not need them all straight away, but you’ll be glad to have them waiting when the time arrives.

Safe Sleeping

It’s recommended that your baby sleep in the same room as you for the first six months. With this in mind a Moses basket or crib is a great choice before your baby officially moves into their own room. These sweet little beds are the perfect size for a newborn baby while allowing you easy access for night feeds, naps and post-feed snoozes. Once your baby is in their own room, there is a wide variety of cots and cribs to choose from. If the available space is tight, you could consider a petite cot which will save on space, or you could go for a cot that converts into a toddler bed once they are older, saving both space and money. You can also buy cribs which tilt (safely) that can ease reflux and trapped wind if you find that your baby needs a little help.

A Changing Table

Babies need their nappies changing a lot! While you might be happy to change your baby on a changing mat placed on the floor or on the bed, a changing table will save your back! A changing table is perfect for having everything to hand, as they often have a shelf or basket for changing essentials, so you won’t be searching for creams and nappies while holding onto a soiled nappy! And what will you do with the dirty nappy? Give a nappy bin a try! It’s not essential, but they are brilliant at keeping nappy smells at bay and save you a trip to the outside bin after every change.

A Feeding Chair

No matter how you’re planning on feeding your baby, having somewhere comfortable to sit while you feed them, particularly at night. If you have the space, you might want to invest in a feeding chair - a specialist chair that’s padded and supported in all the right places and will usually have a rocking or gliding action to help soothe your little one. If you don’t have room for a large feeding chair, any supportive and comfortable chair will be helpful. A nursing pillow can also help to ease sore arms from long feeding sessions.

Storage Solutions

With clothes, nappies, books, bedding and toys, finding room for all your baby’s bits and bobs can be tricky, so it’s a good idea to opt for some storage solutions for the nursery, Having a set of drawers for vests, grows and outfits will help to keep them clean and tidy, whereas baskets and storage boxes are useful for storing teddies, wipes and nappies. You’ll find that many baby cribs and cots come with matching chests of drawers and wardrobes, if you are opting for a cohesive look to your nursery.

A Gentle Nightlight

The last thing you want to do when you go and do a night feed or a midnight nappy change, is to have a big bright light on to wake up your sleepy baby completely. A nightlight is the perfect solution. It will provide just enough light to see by while not making the room too bright. You can find nightlights in all shapes and colours - just be sure to choose something that gives off a soft and gentle light and try to avoid ‘blue’ light which might be too stimulating. Having a night light that clips onto the cot or onto the changing table can be very handy too. A cute string of low-wattage fairy lights can also make a great nightlight and will make the nursery look extra inviting.
